COUNTIFS with Multiple Criteria

Count records matching several conditions.

Practice EXCELLearning path

What this solves

Count open orders for one line and one date. This pattern is useful when the business question is clear but a generic tutorial is too abstract.

The rule

=COUNTIFS(range1,criteria1,range2,criteria2)

=COUNTIFS($B:$B,"Open",$C:$C,H2)
Google Sheets: The core pattern is also usable in Google Sheets; exact function support and locale separators can differ.

Real-work checklist

  1. Define the business key and expected grain before writing the formula, query or markup.
  2. Test the pattern on a small known sample where you can verify the answer manually.
  3. Check missing values, duplicates and data types before trusting a large result.
  4. Scale to the real file or database only after the logic is proven.

Common mistake

Text, dates and numbers must match the underlying cell values, not only their displayed format.
