Safe SQL UPDATE Workflow
Preview exactly what an UPDATE will touch before changing data.
What this solves
Correct a controlled set of master-data rows. This pattern is useful when the business question is clear but a generic tutorial is too abstract.
The rule
Run the WHERE clause as SELECT first, use a transaction where supported, and verify row counts.
SELECT * FROM Materials WHERE Status='OLD';
-- verify first, then update in a transactionReal-work checklist
- Define the business key and expected grain before writing the formula, query or markup.
- Test the pattern on a small known sample where you can verify the answer manually.
- Check missing values, duplicates and data types before trusting a large result.
- Scale to the real file or database only after the logic is proven.
Common mistake
Never run a broad UPDATE because a filter “looks right”. Preview and back up first.
